Robotic Drives

Focus of our research:

  • Ecological and economical efficient dimensioning and selection
  • Development of new topologies and concepts
  • Overall mechatronic analysis of the drives

High demands are imposed on the drives of a robot in order to achieve consistently high quality over the entire service life of the overall system while at the same time offering flexible application options.

With the aim of developing sustainable drive technologies, we do research on resource-efficient robot drives and transmissions. The consideration of ecological and economic efficiency in all life phases of the robotic system enables the development of optimal drives based on various criteria as well as the identification and consideration of possible conflicting objectives.

Flexible applications, agile production and learning robots require the implementation of further sensor technology, for example to detect a dynamic environment. This increases the complexity and the inherent dynamics of the system. We develop new models and methods to integrate additional functionality during the hardware design and thus reduce the complexity of the overall system, thereby increasing robustness and reducing maintenance efforts.

An overall mechatronic analysis completes our methods and allows a combined consideration of hardware and software of the drives. For example, we are investigating software-based compensation of compliance and friction, so that lighter or cheaper components can be used without reducing accuracy.
