Energy Transition & Digitalization: Research Project KI4ETA Launched

In June, the research project "Artificial Intelligence for Energy Technologies and Applications in Manufacturing" (KI4ETA) started. Within the project, the research institutes IMS and PTW from TU Darmstadt as well as eleven additional research & industry partners will demonstrate how the use of artificial intelligence can make industrial production systems more efficient and environmentally friendly.

The core objectives of the BMWi-funded project are the reduction of CO2 emissions by aligning electricity consumption with renewable energies. Therefore, intelligent algorithms will be developed that close the energy control loop of industrial production plants through centralized and decentralized approaches and thus utilize optimization potentials in the best possible way. In addition to being implemented at the ETA-Factory of the TU Darmstadt, the project's findings will also be integrated into real production processes in companies to demonstrate their practical application.

Within the KI4ETA project, the Institute for Mechatronic Systems in Mechanical Engineering is focusing on the intelligent integration of a hybrid energy storage system into the digital factory. This system consists of a flywheel energy storage system and a lithium-ion battery and was built in the previous research projects ETA-Fabrik and PHI-Factory. In addition, the development of a bi-directional charging station will enable Vehicle2X technologies, further increasing the energy flexibility of the ETA-Factory.
